Marblehead Community Preservation
The Community Preservation Act (CPA) is a valuable tool for protecting the qualities that make Marblehead such a uniquely interesting place to live – all the many, many old and historic buildings and sites that tell of our shared heritage; pockets of open spaces and parks throughout the town; trails for walking, biking and cross-country skiing; a diversity of housing types for all residents. CPA is a locally controlled and dedicated source of funding to preserve and add to these valuable resources. Voting to pass CPA is a commitment to our community.
What is CPA?
The Community Preservation Act (CPA) enables communities to create a dedicated fund for historic preservation, open space, affordable housing and outdoor recreation projects. Towns that adopt the act also receive a percentage of matching funds from the statewide Community Preservation Trust Fund each year for these projects. In 2013, the matching funds are about 30% of what a town raises.
Community Preservation Marblehead is asking for your support to adopt the CPA in 2014. Marblehead’s local funds would come from a 1% surcharge on property taxes, which amounts to about $6 a month, $65 a year for the average family. The chart on page 2 shows in more detail where you would fit in the surcharge.
There are several exemptions:
